What is the Perfect Room Temperature?

If you’re married, or have a roommate, then you know all about this dilemma, what is the perfect room temperature? It’s also the type of question that our technicians at Just In Time Furnace Inc get quite frequently because as fellow Calgary residents, we give you the same reliable services we would want for our own families with high ethical standards and no hidden fees. Temperature questions, and concerns about outdated or poorly performing furnaces, is often how Just In Time Furnace Inc gets introduced to our customers.

So what’s the answer? To some degree, men and women are built differently, and they have very different ideas about what constitutes a “comfortable” temperature. Colloquially, room temperature is the range of temperatures that people prefer for indoor settings, at which the air feels neither hot nor cold when wearing typical indoor clothing, typically between 15°C (59°F) and 25°C (77°F).

Men’s Health Magazine in August 2015 cited a recently released study by researchers at the Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands that found many modern office buildings follow a “thermal comfort model that was developed in the 1960s.” The temperature is based on the metabolic rate of an average 40-year-old man who weighs 155 pounds. Based on this standard women, who in general have lower resting metabolic rates meaning they aren’t producing as much body heat when they’re sitting behind a desk as men are – often the leave a work environment cold enough to have your female colleagues reaching for their sweaters. And you can bet its’s the same concern at home.

When it comes to sleeping, a National Sleep Foundation study puts the magic number at 65°F or 18°C. This is consistent with Sleep.org’s suggested bedroom temperature should be between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal sleep. When lying in bed, your body temperature decreases to initiate sleep, and this proposed temperatures can actually help facilitate sleep. If your room is cooler, it will be much easier to shut your eyes for the night – and lower utility bills too.
