Tankless Water Heaters in Calgary

The world is changing with consumers demanding greater efficiency and economy, while at the same time a more environmentally conscious solution to our everyday concerns. At Just in Time Furnace in Calgary, we understand those needs when it comes to hot water heaters with tankless models available from brands like Navien, Rheem®, and Rinnai®.

Benjamin Waddy Maughan, an English painter, patented the first instantaneous water heater in 1868. Since that time there have been many upgrades with the most recent being tankless or on-demand water heaters.

Both tank and tankless water heaters work on a similar principle—cold water comes in, gets heated, and then gets distributed to where it’s needed when you turn on your hot water tap. However, rather than heating a full tank of water, water is heated as it passes through the coils of the copper heat exchanger. For condensing models, the water is preheated as it passes through a secondary stainless steel (latent) heat exchanger, capturing any extra heat (or latent heat) before it escapes into the vent system. The tankless water heater adjusts as needed to ensure the temperature set point is maintained. A digital controller allows the user to choose the desired temperature.

There are a number of benefits to installing a tankless water heating system. For example, Rinnai’s tankless technology uses up to 40 percent less energy than a traditional tank and helps save on energy and utility costs. Systems come in multiple sizes to right-size your installation and customize your efficiency. Components can be easily exchanged, if needed, versus replacing the entire system and recyclable parts means less waste in landfills. Based on the American Department of Energy, Energy STAR ® lifecycle estimates, tankless water heaters can last up to twice as long as traditional tank units (2011).

This innovative technology provides an endless supply of hot water whenever and wherever it’s needed, even for simultaneous uses at multiple fixtures while saving space with a compact design – essential in today’s condo’s and modern homes - these wall-mounted models can be installed on interior or exterior walls and in compact spaces to free up valuable space. Units are designed for both residential and commercial use.

While there are many advantages to having a tankless water heater, one disadvantage of a tankless water heater is the upfront cost, especially when purchasing a heater big enough to accommodate the whole family. Lower operating cost, greater efficiency, and longer lifespan should be considered against this cost when making your decision.
