Improving Indoor Air Quality

Spring wildfires in Alberta have given residents lots of concerns and many reasons for concern. There’s an old saying about “when the smoke clears…” yet till then, it is the smoke that remains a concern given the number of older individuals, or those with asthma and other compromised respiratory systems, who are usually sensitive to outdoor pollutants like smog, smoke, soot, and fumes.

Your indoor air quality is just as important a health concern as the concerns about outdoor air pollution. The air inside your home may be as polluted – or worse – than the air outside your home. If you’re living with a low quality of indoor air, you may be suffering more than you think – indoor air can enhance allergy symptoms, trigger illnesses, and spread contaminants.

Indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. The medical community is recognizing the paramount importance of clean indoor air to a healthy home and focusing on the benefits of whole-home air cleaning as part of an integrated approach to respiratory wellness and allergy-related issues.

Cleaner air can help ease asthma, reduce allergies, shorten illnesses and improve wellness. According to a 2010 CBC News report, Statistics Canada reported in June 2009 “that eight per cent of Canadians aged 12 or older said they had been diagnosed with asthma,” with little change since 2001. The article also notes that “more than one in six Canadians suffer from hay fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis,” adding that a survey commissioned by pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson suggests: as many as 10 million Canadians may suffer allergy symptoms; that more women than men admit to symptoms; that 55 per cent of Canadians claim their allergies cut into their productivity; and that they limit their outdoor time to prevent the onset of symptoms.

The best way to clean your Calgary home’s air is to invest in a high quality air filter for your heating and cooling system and replace it seasonally. If you are using your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system on a daily basis, consider replacing it every quarter. If you use your system sporadically, twice a year would be recommended.
