Improve Indoor Air Quality with Mechanical & Electronic Air Filters

When our parents said “go outside and get some fresh air” they knew something that science has since proven - the air inside our homes, offices, and other buildings can be more polluted than the air outside. The air inside your home may be polluted by lead (in house dust), formaldehyde, fire-retardants, radon, volatile chemicals from fragrances used in conventional cleaners as well as major allergen including microscopic dust mites, mold, and heaps of pet and your own dandruff.

While yucky, there can also be some real health concerns for children, people with asthma or compromised immune systems, and the elderly may be especially sensitive to indoor pollutants, but other effects on health may appear years later, after repeated exposure.

At Just In Time Furnace Inc., we care about the health of our fellow Calgarians. The healthcare professionals at WebMD offers a number of tips to improve indoor air quality including keeping your floors clean, keeping humidity around 30-50 percent, no indoor smoking, test for radon and stop using synthetic air fresheners. One of the simplest methods are stop using aerosol sprays and open windows so toxic chemicals don’t build up in your home.

Improve Indoor Air Quality
In addition to these simple tips, Just In Time Furnace Inc. carries several types of air cleaning devices designed to remove various types of pollutants. There are two types of air cleaning devices can remove particles from the air – mechanical air filters and electronic air cleaners:

  • Mechanical air filters remove particles by capturing them on filter materials - High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are in this category. Gas-phase air filters remove gases and odors by using a material called a sorbent, such as activated carbon, which adsorbs the pollutants. Consumers can select a particle removal air filter by looking at its efficiency in removing airborne particles from the air stream that passes through it. This efficiency is measured by the minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) for air filters installed in the ductwork of HVAC systems. Filters with a MERV between 7 and 13 are likely to be nearly as effective as true HEPA filters.
  • Electronic air cleaners such as electrostatic precipitators use a process called electrostatic attraction to trap charged particles.
