How Often Should You Be Changing Your Furnace Filter?
The answer to that is going to depend in large part on the type of filter you have. Let's take a look at the three most common types:
Disposable Fiberglass Filters
Disposable fiberglass filters are the least expensive, and therefore the most common types of furnace filters found in Calgary homes. However, fiberglass filters are also the least effective when it comes to keeping dirt and dust out of your furnace, and they have a tough time trapping small mold and pollen particles. It is advisable to change these types of filters at least every one to two months.
Washable Electrostatic Filters
Washable electrostatic filters are more expensive, but also more effective than disposable filters. They utilize an electrostatic charge to trap contaminants, and can help block about 20% of smaller air-borne particles such as pollen and mold. Washable electrostatic filters are reusable and need to be cleaned once a month. Depending on the specific type of filter, however, it may need to be replaced anywhere from every three to twelve months.
Pleated Allergy Filters
Pleated allergy filters are specifically designed for people who suffer from allergies and other respiratory conditions. Their pleated design allows for a higher surface area, which in turn makes them 35% to 50% efficient at catching dust, mold, and pollen. These types of filters are generally designed to last for three months before needing to be replaced, but may need more frequent servicing during times of high pollen levels.
