Family Day Activities to Do in Calgary
Family Day is observed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, and Saskatchewan on the third Monday of February and in 2017 that’s Monday, February 20. Family Day was first held in Canada in the province of Alberta in 1990. It is supposed to reflect the values of family and home that were important to the pioneers who founded Alberta, and give workers the opportunity to spend more time with their families.
Premier Christy Clark proposed the statutory holiday in 2011. In Alberta, many people have a day off work and schools are generally closed on Family Day. Public transport services may run on Sunday or holiday timetables and in rural areas, there may be no services. This holiday celebrates the importance of families and family life to people and their communities – like the technicians at Just In Time Furnace Inc. and other service focused businesses across Calgary.
Because of the ‘holiday’ atmosphere of Family Day, many people plan and take part in activities aimed at the whole family including visiting art exhibitions, watching movies, skating on outdoor ice rinks, playing board games and taking part in craft activities. Other people use this long weekend as an opportunity for a short winter break or to visit distant family members or friends.
If you’re in Calgary for Family Day, here’s a few fun suggestions for you and your family, from our family beginning with Glow Downtown Winter Light Festival that takes place from Feb 17 to Feb 20, 2017 daily from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Glow will light up the core with bright art installations, projections and various theatre-related experiences.
Calgary has many outdoor skating rinks scattered around the city to help reduce holiday stress and increase Family Day enjoyment including:
